The New Year

I was always one that celebrated the New Year like it was a big deal. However, now that I’m older I realize that the whole concept of the “New Year, New Me” is just ridiculous. It seems as if we are prone to only make acceptable changes when there is a special occasion—a New Year, and upcoming wedding, the summer (“swim suit”) season. Nobody needs a “New Year” to make changes, to have a fresh start, to become somebody “new.”

If there are changes that need to be made, make them. Quit being lazy and make the changes. There is essentially nothing different from December 31st and January 1st. We do not stay up until midnight to celebrate other days—Christmas, birthdays, etc.

The New Year does not bring with it change, it brings with it a new date—just like Tuesday brings a different date than Monday. With that being said, it is common that change occurs around the end/beginning of a year; however, this is independent of a “new” year.

For example, I am kicking off the New Year being “unemployed” and helping my family close down a business of ten years. This is new, but it is independent of the New Year. Yes, I am about to go through some major changes, not only being unemployed but also adjusting to living with my fiancé. All of this is new and exciting and scary at the same time. Yet, I did not stay up to ring in the New Year with my new changes and new life…no, I was cuddled in the bed with the fiancé.

So, as we all embark throughout the year, remember that you, and life, can change at any time; no need to wait for superficial holidays and events.
